A full time working mum, Nikki lives in Melbourne with her husband Paul, two children Olivia and Kieran and their much loved schnoodle called Max. As with most mothers, Nikki progressed from cross stitching, to quilting, to painting and then onto stamping and card making as the free time became more and more precious (as it often does when there are husbands, babies and toddlers to look after), the crafts had to be faster to complete!
Having emigrated from England seven years ago, Nikki was introduced to scrapbooking through a friend who produced a page celebrating a Harry Potter party that was thrown for Kieran's 6th birthday. Something just clicked that this was what she had been searching for, and when her husband commented that he could 'see the point of this hobby' she knew she had definitely found something that would fulfil her passion for photography, love of paper, ribbons and sparkly things and the desire to write about their every day lives, oh and spend the odd dollar here and there :o)
Nikki takes her inspiration from the hundreds of photos she snaps every day … her children and even the dog know when the camera is out they have to put on their best smiles!
Six years on, a move to Perth and then back to Melbourne, Nikki's passion for scrapbooking is stronger than ever and she became a Stampin' Up! Demonstrator in May 2009. It took a few workshops and a few purchases (of course) for Nikki to decide that she really could combine her passion for craft with the ability to run her own business. Nikki has a small but growing team of demonstrators and enjoys the support and friendship she has found by becoming a member of the Art with Heart team.
Can you show us your favourite layout?
This is such a hard question because I love all of my layouts and wanted to show you them all! The one I love the most is often the last one that I completed! So I've chosen this one.
I am really passionate about including handwriting on pages, yes even if you don't like your own scrawl! I like to think that one day after I am gone, someone will look back through our albums and treasure these handwritten words – I know I would.
The butterfly from the Great Friend set in the Spring 2009 mini was one of my favourites, and of course the coordinating ribbon, ink and paper in Real Red, Basic Grey and Whisper White made putting together this layout a breeze. Finishing with a sprinkle of Dazzling Diamonds on the butterflies and some Rhinestone brad centres for the flowers this page took very little time to complete.
How would you describe your scrapbook space?
Well, it started out as small secretariat desk located in the lounge so that I could watch the TV and scrap at the same time, but it quickly became obvious that this wasn't big enough and I never watched the TV … so now I create at the kitchen table. I'm not a tidy scrapbooker (much to my husband's horror) … I need everything within arm's reach. Every so often I blitz the bit box (I find it very hard to throw anything away – no matter how small) or the ribbon stash and regain some order … one day I hope to have my own room (hint, hint!).
What's your favourite Stampin' Up! colour combination for scrapbooking?
You want me to choose only one? Well it would have to be something like Chocolate Chip, Old Olive and Real Red … I love these three colours … or Rose Red, Kiwi Kiss and Basic Grey, or …. I could go on and on … but really I just choose colours that compliment the photo and if I am struggling with that, I print the photo in black and white and use whatever takes my fancy on the night.
Favourite thing to eat or drink when you are scrapbooking?
As I scrapbook at night, I'm happy with a glass of water if it is warm, or a camomile tea if it is cold … or a chilled glass of sparkly or Sav Blanc if it is a Friday night or I am scrapping with the girls – I am far too busy to eat :o)
Who are your main scrapbook subjects?
That's easy … my two beautiful children and my lovely husband – I also love to scrapbook our gorgeous friends and family.
How would you describe your scrapbooking style?
I love all sorts of styles – when I look at my pages they go from clean simple layouts to full on 'lets see if we can stick anything else on this page' layouts too. I like to try new techniques, none of my layouts are ever the same and whilst I may take the time to plan the layout it never ends up the way I imagined it would as the creative juices start flowing. As soon as I get paper and ink in my hands, I'm off!
If I had an uninterrupted weekend of scrapbooking by myself this weekend I would work on...
First of all I would gather my scrapbooking girlfriends and set the kitchen table for some serious scrapping! Then, I'd love to make a start on a book for each of my children. Having started scrapping when Olivia was eight and Kieran was six, I've got a lot of catching up to do! Oh and then there are our wedding photos, and I'd love to start a book about me too … are you sure I can only have one weekend?
